The Best Baby Swing!

The Results are in for the Best Baby Swing on the Market
See Which Brand Won!

A few months ago, a discussion was started between our Mom’s Panel and many of our readers about which one baby swing was the best one available today. Although we don’t sell baby equipment, the members of our wonderful Mom’s Panel do share their experiences with many popular products. We think the real-life experiences of other moms are one of the best ways to make informed buying decisions when it comes to baby equipment and baby-related products.

Since the discussion about the best baby swing was generating so much interest, we decided to check out all of the baby swings that our moms nominated as the best and see if we could agree on one single baby swing worthy of being named “The Best Baby Swing on the Market”.

Before we could decide which baby swing was the best,
we needed to agree on what would make a baby swing “The Best Baby Swing on the Market”.

Here’s what we decided:

  • The best swing would have to be affordable for moms on a budget.
  • The best baby swing would have to be versatile and flexible, so that moms could use it in several ways.
  • The best baby swing would have to have great safety features in its design – we’ve all seen flimsy or unsafe baby swings out there.

Once we agreed on these rules, we were ready to check out the swings (twelve of them!) that the majority of our Mom’s Panel and readers had said were the best baby swings out there. Some of them were high end models and some were budget products.

To evaluate the baby swings, we assembled and disassembled, carried, packed, swung and even dropped all of these popular baby swings, from brands we all love, such as Chicco, Graco, Fisher Price, Boppy and several others. We looked not only at the criteria we’d decided on, but also at how easy it was to put the swing together and change it up, how attractive it was and even how small a footprint it had in a room.

After a few weeks, we had a clear winner, and it surprised us.

Why?

Well, we pretty much expected that the winner would end up being one of the more expensive swings on our list. We also expected it to be one of the hot new brands that have emerged in just the last few years. We were wrong, but we were kind of happy about that!

Why?

The baby swing we finally chose as “The Best Baby Swing on the Market” was not only more affordable than we had hoped, it was from one of the most well-known and trusted names in baby and children’s equipment. We liked that.

So, which baby swing did this group of budget-minded, value-focused, downright picky safety freaks finally choose as “The Best Baby Swing on the Market”?

It was the Fisher Price Starlight Papasan Cradle Swing and we’re in love with it.
A couple of us even wished our little ones were small enough for us to need one! One of us bought one for a sister’s baby shower. All of us agreed that we had found the “The Best Baby Swing on the Market”.

Here’s why we were so sure.

Incredible Quality at an Incredible Price

The Fisher Price Starlight Papasan Cradle Swing is extremely affordable, even for moms on a really tight budget, which would be…..well, most of us. We’ve all seen those beautiful baby swings that are wonderful pieces of equipment, but cost $200 or more. It’s depressing to see a really neat product for our babies but not be able to afford the price tag.

The Fisher Price Starlight Papasan Cradle Swing is a gorgeous and very well-designed baby swing, with tons of awesome features, both for safety and for convenience, but at around $120, it’s truly a value-priced option. The swings we evaluated ran from $80 to a little over $190, and the Fisher Price Starlight Papasan Cradle Swing had more options and great features than the most expensive model we tested.

The design is truly innovative and the materials are high-quality, from the frame to the mechanisms to the fabric. The Fisher Price Starlight Papasan Cradle Swing is a high-end swing at a low-end price and you have to love that.

We Love the Versatility of This Swing!

One of the most important things we were looking for in a baby swing was versatility.
We wanted a swing that:

  • Grows with your child.
  • Can be used in more than one way.

The Fisher Price Starlight Papasan Cradle swing really scored on that one. This baby will entertain, soothe and occupy your baby for hours, from newborn stage to toddlerhood. There are so many ways to change up the swing that it’s like having a couple of different swings in one.

Let’s look at the seat/cradle first.

As you can see, for the teeny-tiny stage, the seat of the swing can be configured as a cradle, just as the name says. Although some of the other baby swings we tested do the same thing, most of them required you to change over to an actual bassinet piece. With the Fisher Price Starlight Papasan Cradle Swing, the same seat piece is used for all configurations. The seat just reclines for the cradle position or rises for a seated position. We think that’s a real plus.

Also, when you’re using the swing as a cradle to help your baby sleep, you can choose a front/back motion or a side to side motion, which is something most of the other swings lacked.
When you just want your baby to be safely entertained for a while, you can raise the cradle to the seated position.

The seat itself is incredibly plush, even more so than some of the more expensive models we evaluated. It really is like a little nest for your baby. We especially like this for when it’s used for naps, as it just envelopes the baby in pillowy cushioning. It’s equally great, though, in the seated position, especially for really little babies who may not fill the seat out quite yet. They’re kept snug and steady, even at the newborn stage.

There’s plenty to keep your baby occupied, too, but we’ll get into that in a minute. First, let’s talk about the safety of this awesome swing, because it really shines in that important area.

The Safety You Need for Peace of Mind

No matter what else you’re looking for in a swing, the most important thing is that the swing be safe for your baby. You need to know that even if you need to leave the room for a minute, your baby is safe and secure. The Fisher Price Starlight Papasan Cradle Swing will give you the peace of mind you need, and in so many ways.

First of all, as you can see from this picture, the base of the swing is beautifully designed for sturdiness and security.

Even though the swing is lightweight enough to make carrying easy, the feet are very wide set. In fact, the Fisher Price Starlight Papasan Cradle Swing has one of the widest bases we evaluated. What the wide base means is that it is extremely unlikely that this swing will ever tip. We banged into it, we bumped into it and it stayed steady. There’s no rocking at all, even when the swing is on the faster settings. We found some rocking and jerkiness when we set some of the other swings on higher speeds and we didn’t feel comfortable with that at all.
Another great safety feature is the three point harness. Many swings lack a really safe harness, opting for a simple waist belt instead. We don’t think that’s the safest option. As you can see in this picture, the Fisher Price Starlight Papasan Cradle Swing has a very nice three point harness similar to the ones in strollers and car seats. The three point harness is an added safety that we think is extremely important, especially as your baby gets older and is able to lean forward and move around a bit.

So Many Options for You and Baby

As we said before, the Fisher Price Starlight Papasan Cradle Swing really wowed us with its versatility and options. What it boils down to is that this is a great swing for both nighttime and daytime, sleep time and play time.

The canopy is what makes this swing such a winner for versatility. Here are pictures of the canopy in use during both day and night:

Night time or nap time.

Daytime or play time.

The canopy is the backdrop for a light show that projects from the center of the swing’s “roof”. Your baby has not only the moving mobile to look at, but also a customizable light show of stars that move around on the canopy, something like a planetarium show. You can customize the music, light show and speed to either soothe your little one to sleep or keep him entertained and fascinated.

The sound options on the Fisher Price Starlight Papasan Cradle Swing are the other incredibly versatile feature. There are several nature sounds, such as crickets and bullfrogs, to help soothe a cranky baby or ease him into sleep. There are also eight different songs, which you can play with or without the nature sounds. We love that moms can try different combinations of sound to see what works best for their baby and when. Combined with the canopy show, this is a wonderful feature.

Some Other Great Features We Love

The cutest video we found :)

As you can see, the Fisher Price Starlight Papasan Cradle Swing really made the grade on our three important criteria, but it also has a host f other features that really set it apart.
The seat is extremely easy to clean. It’s machine washable and is easily removed and replaced without a lot of fuss.

The swing itself is extremely lightweight. You can easily move it from room to room or from indoors to outdoors without working up a sweat. It also folds very compactly and very easily and fits comfortably in most car trunks. These things make it very convenient for taking the swing to a babysitter’s house or on a trip.

The swing runs on both battery power and electricity. We love this. You can use the batteries when you’re at a park or don’t have an outlet close to the spot where you want to place the swing. It’s really nice to have a choice when you need it.

All in all, we are really excited about this swing and are very confident in saying that it’s “The Best Baby Swing on the Market”.
